The group, featuring vocalist Dave Gahan and multitalented musician Martin Gore, is supporting its 15th studio album, “Memento Mori,” due out March 24. 3 date scheduled for Chase Center in San Francisco. The legendary electronic music act, which was enshrined into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the amazing 2020 class, kicks off its 19th concert tour with shows on March 23 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento and March 25 at SAP Center in San Jose. Those are the three biggies, for sure, but there are a ton of other cool ‘80s and early ‘90s modern rock acts heading for the Bay Area over the next few months. Not long after that, two more Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acts - the Cure and Duran Duran - are also set to perform individual shows in the area. It all starts this weekend when the mighty Depeche Mode kicks off its Memento Mori World Tour with two shows in Northern California. Yet this year’s offering is going to be absolutely huge - like ‘80s hair huge - led by three of the era’s biggest bands hitting the road. Of course, it’s not unusual to see bands from that era on the docket, given the public’s undying love for music and pop culture from the decade of leg warmers, Cabbage Patch Kids and Walkmans. Yet, one could be forgiven for thinking that it’s actually three or four decades earlier than that given the Bay Area concert calendar - which is just loaded with modern rock acts from the ‘80s. ‘Future Past’ is available on CD and vinyl.Well, we just checked our phone and it indeed says that it’s 2023. However, Simon revealed Upside Down was a turning point for Duran Duran, as it gave them the freedom to explore more diverse sounds. “The whole glam thing became a part of the scene, and Kraftwerk became a big part of the scene as well - and all of that filtered through the new things that people were doing.” It all got a bit dull.”ĭrummer Roger Taylor added: “We also started looking back a little bit as well, to Bowie and Roxy Music. “But then something happened between us and punk: It went into a slightly more austere kind of style where everybody wore black, and the album covers were monochrome. “That album ‘Horses’ was a punk rock album. “Punk affected our musical style, our way of dressing it affected me lyrically massively - the single biggest lyrical influence on me was Patti Smith,” he told Vogue. They were originally inspired by punk music but struck gold with a new wave direction – which, according to frontman Simon Le Bon, was inspired by Ross. The track was released one year before the group rocketed into the charts with their eponymous debut album, featuring the hit singles Planet Earth and Girls on Film. Duran Duran are big fans of Diana Ross’ 1980 hit Upside Down.
